As Different as Night and Day

The Dallas Cowboys traveled to Philadelphia to play the Eagles for First Place in the NFC East on Sunday Night Football.  The tag line in the SNF theme song "Waitin' all day for Sunday Night!" is certainly appropriate.  The match up are usually excellent but the wait for game time seems interminable.  In the end, however, yesterday's wait for game time was well worth it.  If you recall, the Eagles spanked the Cowboys on Thanksgiving 33-10 giving everyone in DFW indigestion.  This game was different from the first play of the game until the last.  You might even say 'As different as night and day!".

The Eagles won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff, wanting to get down and score first like on Thanksgiving.  The only problem is the ball landed between two Eagles who both failed to pick up the ball and the Cowboys recovered it on the Eagle 16 yard line.  5 plays later DeMarco Murray scored the first of his two TD's on the night to put Dallas up 7-0.  By the end of the first quarter, Dallas was up 14-0 and had out gained the Eagles 167 yards to 0 as the Dallas Defense did not even allow a first down.

5 Minutes into the second quarter, Dallas scored again to go up 21-0, and the Eagles still had yet to achieve their first first down.  It was then the game got 'interesting'.  The Eagles mounted a comeback that saw them score 10 points before half time to go in trailing 21-10.  Yet  the Eagles were not quite finished with the Cowboys setting up the second half battle for the NFC East drivers seat heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

The Cowboys got the ball to start the second half, but the Eagles forced a 3 and out then drove for a TD to make the score 21-17.  The Cowboys again went 3 and out and the Eagles scored again to go up 24-21.  Everyone in DFW was thinking "Here we go AGAIN!".  But if nothing else, this Cowboys team is different from past teams that have a reputation for folding in December.  On the ensuing drive after the Eagles pulled ahead, the Cowboys resolutely marched down the field to DeMarco Murray's second TD of the night to retake the lead with 39 seconds left in the quarter 28-14.  The Cowboys never looked back from there.

The Cowboys opened the fourth quarter with another TD  (Dez Bryant's third TD reception of the night) two minutes into it and the Dallas D went to work frustrating the Eagles at almost every opportunity, limiting them to a FG  the rest of the way.  The Cowboys also added a FG to make the final score 38-27.  The victory leaves Dallas alone at 10-4 atop the NFC East and current number 3 seed in the NFC playoffs.  With two games to play, Dallas once again has its fate in their own hands.  They face the Colts and home next week before traveling to Washington to get revenge for the Monday Night loss earlier in the season.  If the Cowboys win out to go 12-4 on the season, they will remain the number 3 seed and host a Wild Card Game.  If the Cowboys lose either or both of the last two games to go 10-6 or 11-5, their playoff appearance would not be assured.  So I am all for winning out and heading into the playoffs as NFC East Champions.  I have gotten half of my Christmas wish, I am holding out the two more wins to complete my Christmas celebration with a trip to the play offs.
