I ran across several things that peaked my interest in my news feeds that I thought I would share with you today. As I reported in yesterday's post, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II gave her Royal Assent to Marriage Equality for England and Wales. After signing the measure into law, Her Majesty had some pointed comments to say about and to New Jersey Governor Christ Christie. Governor Christie, he of the Presidential aspirations, you will recall pandered to his conservative constituency when he vetoed the Marriage Equality bill approved by the New Jersey Legislature. Quoting from The Borowitz Report in the current issue of New Yorker Magazine, The Queen had this to say:
LONDON (The Borowitz Report)—Moments
after approving a new law legalizing gay marriage in England and Wales,
Queen Elizabeth II of Britain unleashed a blistering attack on New
Jersey Governor Chris Christie for “lacking the guts” to do the same.
The British monarch’s brutal evisceration of Gov. Christie stunned
observers, who did not know that she was such a close follower of his
gay-marriage stance.
“I don’t like to badmouth people,” she said.
“But I’m the head of a monarchy that began in the ninth century, and I’m
apparently more modern than Chris Christie.”
After shocking observers with her opening salvo, she continued to tear Gov. Christie to shreds.
“Look, I know he has to appeal to the crazy right wingers in his
party,” she added. “But the fact is, he’s not as forward-thinking as an
eighty-seven-year-old lady who wears a crown on her head. It’s
pathetic.”
Asked if she had advice for Gov. Christie, the British monarch said, bluntly, “Just sign the damn bill, Chris.”
Responding to a reporter’s question about the upcoming royal birth,
Elizabeth replied, “Tell you the truth? I’m just glad the kid’s not
being born in New Jersey.”
Pip, Pip, Hooray! Can we all say "God Save the Queen!"? I think definitely "YES!"
Meanwhile, Wing-nuttery is still alive and well in America as evidenced by Virginia Gubernatorial candidate, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who seeks to make anything other than heterosexual vaginal sex in the missionary position a felony by bringing back Virginia's anti Sodomy law that was declared unconstitutional with all the others by Lawence v Texas ten years ago. In his post, John Aravosis at Americablog asks "Does Ken Cuccinelli go down on his wife?" Included in his post is a video clip of Lawrence O'Donnell's The Last Word discussing this same subject and calling "bullshit" on Attorney General Cuccinelli. This is well worth the reading and watching.
Also in Wing-nuttery today, Right Wing Watch reports
that Peter Sprigg of the hate group Family Research
Council, stopped by Janet Mefferd's radio show yesterday to stoke fears
that ENDA represents a "direct assault on moral values," and is actually
just an effort to legislate the "immorality of those who accept
homosexual conduct." You can listen for yourself to his idiocy via Towleroad.com's article.
As reported by the Washington Post, House Republican Leadership and their lawyers have finally seen the writing on the wall and have filed a court briefing to withdraw from the defense of DOMA in the case of McLaughlin v Panetta regarding spousal benefits for LGBT service members. The briefing reads:
The Supreme Court recently resolved the issue of DOMA Section 3’s
constitutionality. The Windsor decision necessarily resolves the issue
of DOMA Section 3’s constitutionality in this case. While the question
of whether 38 U.S.C. § 101(3), (31) is constitutional remains open, the
House has determined, in light of the Supreme Court’s opinion in
Windsor, that it no longer will defend that statute. Accordingly, the
House now seeks leave to withdraw as a party defendant.
All I can say is "It's About FUCKING TIME!" Sheesh!
Finally in the news today according to the Huffington Post, "Glee" is going on a production hiatus to figure out what do following the sudden death of Cory Monteith from an overdose of heroin and alcohol. The September season premier may also be pushed back to November to give the production team time to rewrite the beginning of the season in which Monteith's character Finn Hudson was to play a major role. It has yet to be determined exactly how they will handle Monteith's death but most likely will entail the death of Finn Hudson in some way which will leave Rachel (Lea Michele) grief stricken I am sure. I will keep you posted on this for as you know I am a fan of all things "Glee".
