In the words of the 1940's era song made popular by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sister, Acentuate the Positive, my news feed yesterday abounded with items and articles that did just that. From the UK comes the news that the first currently active footballer, Semi-pro Gainsborough Trinity winger Liam Davis came out of the closet publicly on Saturday in an interview in the Lincolnshire Echo. Davis who also owns a restaurant, the Point Café and Bar in Cleethopres, with his partner Neil had this to say: “I personally hope that over the next 10 years I’m not the only gay
footballer out there. Nobody wants to be forced out, but I hope they can
look and see there is someone out there who has done it. I hope we can
get to a stage where it is not a bad thing, that there is no problem and
people just get on with it.”. While stateside at the US National Figure Skating Championship, 19 year old Jason Brown earned his spot on the US Olympic Team headed for Sochi next month with his epic and electrifying performance that brought the crowd to its feet before his routine was even finished.
In the Marriage Equality arena there was also good news when Out Gay US Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) announced his engagement to his longtime partner Randy Florke. Maloney and Florke have been together for 21 years and have three children. Maloney released the following statement: “After 21 years together, we are excited for the next step in our journey as a family. For decades, we've fought to ensure that all families can experience the joys of loving commitment and we are proud to have our friends and family share this special moment with us in the near future". Traveling South to Oklahoma, Federal U.S. District Judge Terence Kern has ruled Oklahoma's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional after languishing in the courts for nine years. The ruling has been stayed pending appeal, however Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin is 'troubled' by the ruling saying "I am disappointed in the judge's ruling and troubled that the will of the people has once again been ignored by the federal government.". Her statement is not surprising to me coming from the state that gave us the infamous Sally Kern and a great many others moribund in their neanderthal way of thinking.
In other political news, GOProud founder Jimmy LaSalvia has officially become an 'independent conservative' by relinquishing his membership in the Republican Party. Writing on his blog he states that the current leadership lacks the courage to stand up to tolerance of bigotry in the GOP. This goes to show you can be both Gay and Conservative just not necessarily Republican. Does this move signal a death knell for GOProud as an organization? Only time will tell. Also in the political realm, legislation has been introduced in New York, Maryland, and Minnesota that would ban Ex-Gay Conversion Therapy for minors. Hopefully the ban on this odious and dangerously harmful practice will continue to spread throughout the US. LGBTQ youth are the most vulnerable to the effects of this quack pseudo science which has led to too many instances of depression, homelessness and suicide among them. The sooner all 50 states have banned the practice, the better we will be.
