The Archbishop of Rhode Island and the Archbishop of San Francisco both made 'inherently disorded' statements in response the the victory of LGBT persons in winning Marriage Equality in the State of Rhode Island. Archbishop Thomas Tobin of RI warned Catholics to think twice before endorsing Marriage Equality or attending the celebration of vows in a Same Sex Ceremony. While on the other coast, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of SF, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, called Marriage Equality a 'serious injustice' saying:
"The meaning of marriage cannot be redefined, because its meaning lies in our very nature. Therefore, regardless of what law is enacted, marriage remains the union of one man and one woman – by the very design of nature, it cannot be otherwise. Marriage is the only institution that unites a man and a woman to each other and to any child conceived of their union. While those making great sacrifices to raise their children in less than ideal circumstances need and deserve our love and support, we cannot claim to have a just society if we do not look out for the most vulnerable among us: children. That means preserving in the law the principle that every child deserves a mother and father united in marriage. That means supporting in our institutions and in our culture the true and unique meaning of marriage."
Back in Rhode Island Archbishop Tobin stated:
"Our respect and pastoral care, however, does not mean that we are free to endorse or ignore immoral or destructive behavior, whenever or however it occurs. Indeed, as St. Paul urges us, we are required to “speak the truth in love.” (Eph 4:15)
At this moment of cultural change, it is important to affirm the teaching of the Church, based on God’s word, that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered,” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2357) and always sinful. And because “same-sex marriages” are clearly contrary to God’s plan for the human family, and therefore objectively sinful, Catholics should examine their consciences very carefully before deciding whether or not to endorse same-sex relationships or attend same-sex ceremonies, realizing that to do so might harm their relationship with God and cause significant scandal to others."
I think they should remove the timber from there own eyes before they come after the splinter in mine. Cordeileone of the infamous drunk driving arrest after celebrating being elevated to Archbishop has no room for moral outrage over a secular law that does not concern the citizens of his diocese and is all the way over on the other side of the country. While Tobin needs to back up and take a look at the definition of 'significant scandal' before speaking out against Marriage Equality. After all which is more scandalous, two avowed homosexuals uniting in love and having their relationship legally recognized or Catholic priests raping children and the church leaders helping to cover it up and enabling the rapists to continue their abuse of children by merely moving them to another diocese?
Neither of these supposed 'holy men' would know the truth if it bit them in the ass, the Catholic church, like many religions who believe in bullshit dogma, is in her death throes and lashing out with their dying breath as they relegate themselves to anachronisms of things we used to believe but no longer do because they are simply unprovable to be true. They know they have lost the battle, they just want to wipe out as many as they can on the way down. So much for 'truth in love'.
