Sports Notes

The Sochi Olympics ended yesterday, however the Olympics were not the only thing making news in the world of sports over the weekend, but we will start there.  The top individual medal winner was Out Speedskater Ireen Wust of the Netherlands with 2 Gold and 3 Silver Medals.  Ryan Quinn from Outsports also did a terrific interview with Gay Biathlete Brian Olsen on why the definition of 'Out' has changed in the world of Olympic Sports.  Also on Outsports, Ryan Sifferman of Fox Sports did a series of Ryan in Russia posts about the observations of an Openly Gay Sports Fan/Media person attending the Sochi Olympics.

Meanwhile, back here in the US, the NFL combine was in Indianapolis over the weekend.  The combine is where prospective NFL players coming out of college showcase their talent for the scouts and team officials.  The big story of the combine was of course Missouri Defensive End Michael Sam who is set to become the first openly Gay NFL athlete.  Sam gave a press conference during the combine and from all accounts handled all the media hype wonderfully well.  His operative phrase: "I just want to do what I love to do and that's play football".  Cyd Zeigler also did an excellent analytical article, The Phantom Now Has A Face, on how the conversation is moving forward on a Gay player in the NFL.

Then last but not least, Jason Collins made history last night when he took to the boards with the Brooklyn Nets in their game with the Los Angeles Lakers as the first openly Gay active player in the NBA.  His appearance was met with some light applause and then it was on to business as usual and the game continued without incident.  In fact, it was almost a 'ho-hum, oh he's Gay, so what' kind of moment.  Would that that would become the normal reaction to professional Gay athletes no matter the sport.  Jason Collins road from prospective to actual first openly Gay player in the NBA was paved with patience and a lot of hard work.  There is also this photograph of Jason Collins on the court in an NBA game which says more than a million words about Gays in pro sports.  Now all we need is some courageous athletes from the NHL and MLB to join Jason Collins and Michael Sam so we can sound the trumpets around Jericho and the walls will come tumbling down.  How inspiring that will be to young Gay athletes as they are coming up and 'Out'.  To know that they can be that top flight athlete that makes it to the elite level of professional sports, even if they are Gay.  It could be the difference between another potential suicide and success in the sport they love.  We can only hope (and work our butts off to get there)!

This week on Monday with Mozart is the Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet in A Major, KV581 with a performance by Valter Vitek on Clarinet along with the Kubin Quartet.  This recording was made in Ostrava, Czech Republic in 1989.  You may also hear the master's Violin Concerto Number 3 over on my tumblr.

Finally for today, to get your week started right is this collection of handsome hard bodied hunks lounging about the page in their Monday's Undies below the video.  Check out the Hottie of the Day! to be found on my tumblr as well.  Thanks for starting your week with a visit here at Nichevo, see you again tomorrow.  Until next time as always, Enjoy!

Coming Events, Coming Out, And A Special Request

"Sunrise by the Sea"

I worked a long day yesterday accomplishing a lot but wearing myself out in the process. I was so tired I kept falling asleep while talking to Will on Skype. I fell asleep so many times he woke me up and told me to go take a nap (lol)! I did take a nap awaking around 5:30 AM which is way late for me. However it is my day off so I have a little lee way here. I am off until tomorrow night at 10 PM when I start a two week cycle of midnight shifts because G is off to Sri Lanka on family business for that long. It will be interesting to see the other end of the day for a while just to see what kind of madness ensues in the middle of the night around here. As you all well know, Uncle Gerry is no stranger to either midnight shifts or the madness that occurs overnight no matter the neighborhood. We shall see what happens and dully report the events in these pages.

Amidst all the Inaugural news and commentary of the past few days, I did wander to other areas of the Internet where I found a couple of items of interest. In the "recommended for you" section of my You Tube landing page I found the following video of a young man telling his coming out story. In our continuing efforts to provide information and support to those gay and questioning youth (or adults) out there, I thought this video would be a great lead in to the next item I have on tap which we will get to right after you take a listen to what Carl has to say:

The video above led me to discover the upcoming movie on the lifetime movie network entitled "Prayers for Bobby" starring Sigourney Weaver which tells the coming out story of a young man in the 70's and the failure of his mother's efforts to "pray away the gay". From the official website comes the following:

About Prayers for Bobby

Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Sigourney Weaver stars in this emotional true story about a 1970s religious suburban housewife and mother who struggles to accept her young son Bobby being gay. What happens to Bobby is tragic and causes Mary to question her faith; ultimately this mom changes her views in ways that she never could have imagined. Also starring: Ryan Kelley ("Mean Creek"), Henry Czerny ("The Tudors"), Dan Butler ("Frasier") and Susan Ruttan ("L.A. Law"), Austin Nichols ("John From Cincinnati"), Carly Schroeder ("Mean Creek"), Scott Bailey ("Guiding Light"), and newcomers Shannon Eagen and Rebecca Louise Miller.

The movie premiers on January 24th at 9 PM Eastern time on the Lifetime Network (check your local listings). Maybe you know someone who could benefit from the broadcast whom you could invite to view with you or maybe throw a watching party. I watched the clips available on the website and this looks like it could be an excellent educational vehicle aimed straight (pardon the pun) at mainstream America. It also looks like a great movie with terrific performances telling an emotional story with dignity and grace. I will be watching, will you?

My posting schedule will probably shift a few hours due to the change in my work schedule, however there will continue to be regular post during the week as you have come to expect. After all it would be remiss of me to deprive you of eye candy and my pithy commentary just because I change shifts, would I not? In that vein I have some excellent examples of Random Hotness for you today and coming up tomorrow is an uber hot edition of Buck Nekkid Fantasies to fire up your weekend. It should be interesting indeed around my neck of the woods. Oh and a final note, I have a blog buddy whom you all are familiar with from these pages in the past who is taking steps into his future. Mike Pierce of New Chapter, Same Old Book has moved from his home in West Virginia to Atlanta where he is going to school and making his bid for independence. He publishes two other blogs All Sports News and Hollywood News and Gossip all of which have links in the sidebar. Mike has signed up for a program where he gets paid per post and per page visit. It would be a great favor to me and a real boon to Mike's economy if you guys would click on his links and pay him a visit on a regular basis just to see what he has to say and help him on his way. We wish you the best, Mike! Thank you guys for helping out, we will catch you here tomorrow. Until next time as always, Enjoy!
