Tournament Time, A Little History And Big Plans For Tomorrow

Just above this paragraph is the welcome pin we are wearing at the hotel for the NCAA Tournament folks and the photo at the top is taken from inside back cover of The Complete Guide to NLR. NLR along with LR were named in the 2007 Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the country's largest, private, non-profit preservation organization. Chosen from among 63 nominees, NLR significant historic contributions include the USS Razorback, the Main Street Argenta program, The Old Mill, and its active participation by the local Trail of Tears chapter. The town was first surveyed and platted in 1866 as Argenta (Spanish for silver) for the silver mines just north of town. In 1890 Argenta filed papers for incorporation as a city. LR passed legislation to annex Argenta and make it the eighth ward which is the basis for the feuding I blogged about earlier. Local mover and shaker W C Faucette countered the move by getting elected to the state legislature where he introduced the legislation which made it possible for a new city to be created by the name of North Little Rock. Since 1994 , NLR has been an active participant in the Main Street Arkansas program under the auspices of the National Main Street Program which has been the driving force behind the revitalization of the downtown Argenta historic district and the tourism industry. This area has many historic buildings and attractions, I am looking forward to spending my off time getting familiar with them all. For a history buff like myself, this area is literally a gold mine and I intend to discover and explore all I can.

Tomorrow looks to be an exciting day. SG, SGGurl, and I are going to Easter services at the Open Door Community, whose pastor is Gay, followed by a huge pot luck dinner with the community and topped off by an exploration of the USS Razorback at the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum. Quite the full day as planned so I will have lots to tell you about in Monday's post. As I discover and explore the regions attractions I will be sure to tell you all about everything I find. I am in the "split" between my shifts today so I wanted to get this posted. It was a wild night at the AllTell Arena with fans of Texas, Memphis State, Mississippi State and one other smaller college (of which I do not know the name) all winning and celebrating. I have guests in the hotel from all three big schools but no one has been able to tell me the other school's name. I suppose I could look it up on ESPN but suffice it to say I am happy enough that Texas won and my guests are happy although most of them are rather hoarse from cheering on their teams. Yesterday was payday so I did what any sensible Gay man with money in his pocket would do, I went shopping! I needed some new shoes for work as the ones I had were hard on my feet as the area behind the desk is ceramic tile on cement. I could not stop at just one pair, I needed new athletic shoes also so I would not mar the deck of the Razorback or any other boat or ship I may board. It really did not set me back that much, I am not one to spend $100 or more on sneakers, I got out for $60 for the two pair and then went grocery shopping. I am really liking having a stove, oven and full size fridge so I can indulge myself with my own cooking. It is certainly more cost effective and I must admit I am an excellent cook. I don't do fancy a lot, just good home cooking Southern Style with a healthy dose of Tex-Mex and a little Italian mixed in. In times past I have opened the hearts of many a young man by way of his stomach, sometimes even leading to the opening of more than his heart when it came time for desert. But that is another story for another time.

I work 4 to midnight tonight and then on Saturday I am working a split shift 10 AM - 2PM and 5 PM - 9 PM which should be our busy hors that day. Then Sunday I am off again and I am going to see the Razorback with my buddies. One of them, SG, is the engineer on the boat. The crew is all ex military and all volunteer and there is a possibility that I might be able to join the crew and do some cruises with them this summer. That could be a lot of fun as well as participating in the educational aspects of the ship being a living museum. I want to take a cruise on the Arkansas Queen also as I have never been on a paddle wheel river boat, something every Southern Gentleman should do some time during his lifetime. I think also I will purchase a bicycle along the way so I can follow the NSRW and check out all the historical markers for the Trail of Tears.

The NCAA Tournament starts big time today and the hotel is sold out. There is of course many attendant activities that go along with the Tournament so downtown should be a good place to find some lively action with all the visiting teams and supporters. On Sunday we have Elvis impersonations in the club at the hotel at 2 Pm and 8 Pm so the place should be rocking out all day too!So by Monday I should be tuckered out and ready to sleep in before heading to work to do the audit that night and the next. I will have to work in a post sometime on Saturday but it might be late in the afternoon before I get it done.
