This week, our New Adventure takes us into the world of Italian Grand Opera at the turn of the 20th Century. Our subject, only the composer who has more operas produced on one stage or antother than any other in the history of Opera. No it is not Verdi or Wagner, it is Giacomo Puccini who the BBC profiles in detail in the documentary posted below. from the video description:
Giacomo Puccini (Italian: [ˈdʒaːkomo putˈtʃiːni]; 22 December 1858 -- 29 November 1924) was an Italian composer whose operas are among the important operas played as standards.
Puccini has been called "the greatest composer of Italian opera after Verdi". While his early work was rooted in traditional late-19th-century romantic Italian opera, he successfully developed his work in the realistic verismo style, of which he became one of the leading exponents.
Over on my tumblr, I put together a play list of instrumental highlights from the Puccini Operas La Bohéme and Madama Butterfly plus an Aria from Turandot beautifully sung. From La Bohéme Act II is Musette Waltz and the Duet from Act IV. From Madama Butterfly comes the Aria Un bel di vedremo. Finally, what Puccini highlight reel would be complete without Turandot's Nessun Dorma here sung by the incomparable Luciano Pavarotti and friends.
