The Battle of Texas

The battle for NFL bragging rights in the State of Texas had its latest iteration yesterday at the Taj Ma Jones (AT&T Stadium) in Arlington between the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans at High Noon.  Both teams were 3-1 coming into the game.  The first half was a defensive struggle until right before the half when the Cowboys finally broke onto the score board with a Field Goal to go up 3-0.

In the second half, Houston took the lead on its first possession with a TD to lead 7-3.  That lead only lasted 2:41 before the Cowboys scored their own TD to go up 10-7.  Early in the fourth quarter Dallas went up 17-7 on a TD from Romo to Dez Bryant.  Then the Texans battled back to tie the score at 17 with a minute left in regulation.  The Cowboys had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but Cowboys Kicker Dan Bailey snapped his 30 straight FG streak when he missed wide left on a 53 yard FG and the game went into overtime.

It seemed the Texans had all the momentum going into OT, however it not to be their day.  The Texans won the OT Coin Toss and took the ball.  The Cowboys defense made the plays to stop the Texans from scoring on that first drive.  Then the Cowboys did a little marching of their own.  however it took a miraculous 37 yard circus catch of a Tony Romo pass to Dez Bryant to put them in FG range for Bailey.  Bailey calmly came out and kicked a 49 yard FG straight down the middle of the goal posts to win the game for Dallas 20-17.

The Cowboys now find themselves in a rarefied place where they had not been in many a year with a  4-1 record after 5 games and tied for first place in the NFC East.  After the expectations of another mediocre season, the Cowboys are proving the naysayers wrong by simply winning the games they would not have won last year if presented with the same scenarios.  I am pleasantly surprised and totally happy with the season so far.  Next week, the road gets tougher with a trip to Seattle to play the Seahawks on Sunday.  I will probably not be as happy this time next week, but you can never tell what will happen on any given Sunday in the NFL.  I will keep my fingers crossed for a victory over the Super Bowl Champs, but I will not hold my breath!
