As a general rule, Republicans are a devious lot, the latest evidence being the passage of a Anti-Marriage Equality constitutional amendment out of committee to the full House in Indiana yesterday. After hundreds of hours of testimony before the Judiciary Committee, House Speaker, Republican Brian Bosma, foresaw the demise of bill HR3 coming to pass. Bosma then pulled a power play machination and moved the bill out of the Judiciary Committee to the Elections and Appointments Committee. After only 4 hours of testimony, that committee passed HR3 to the floor of the House in a 9-3 vote along party lines. The bill now must pass two separately-elected General Assemblies and be approved by a voter
majority in a public referendum before becoming part of the Indiana constitution. Even if that happens, sure to follow will be a lawsuit questioning the constitutionality of the Amendment where it will eventually be struck down somewhere along the Judicial path. This is a move by Indiana Republicans designed to waste time and money, keep lawyers employed and is rooted in deep seated anti-Gay fear and animus. Of course the question of constitutionality of said amendment may be a moot point depending on the results of the Utah and Oklahoma decisions now up for appeal in the 10th Circuit. The Republicans know they have lost the war, but continue to futilely fight the battle in an effort to appeal to their old, rich, conservative base to maintain their stranglehold on the current government in Indiana. The sooner these dinosaurs become extinct, the better off the whole country will be. I loved the comment on the article by Towleroad reader Jamal49 when he posted "Well, this is how Republicans do it, you see. Lie, cheat,
steal, move the goal posts, change the rules, obfuscate, obstruct,
corrupt and do whatever they can by whatever nefarious means necessary
to subvert the democratic process. Just a reminder of what awaits us if the Republicans regain control
of the U.S. Senate, increase their seats in the U.S. House and retake
the White House in the 2014 and 2016 elections.". Just another verse in their same tired old song. We need to change the record on the turntable and we need to do it as quickly as possible.
