Bill Maher, Dan Savage and the Catholic League

In case you missed last Friday's Bill Maher's interview with Dan Savage,  it was a goody.  Maher was remarking about the Marriage Equality victory in Hawaii when he mentioned Catholic Bishop Silva made the statement that Marriage Equality will harm children and that these children are more likely to commit suicide than kids raised in traditional marriages.  Dan Savage replied to that statement with this statement of his own: "He's confusing children who were raised by gay parents with children who were raped by Catholic priests."  Savage also said he felt that Catholic leaders could not take the moral high ground on either Gay Marriage or Gay Adoption/Parenthood due to the continuing scandal of  "kiddie fucking priests".  Savage mentioned the exorcism  performed by a Catholic Bishop in Illinois at the same time as Governor Pat Quinn was signing Marriage Equality into law.  Savage wondered when the Bishop would get around to exorcising the evil spirit child rape by priests.  This morning the Catholic League president and anti-Gay bigot Bill Donohue announced he would be sending a letter to every member of Time-Warner's Board of Directors, the parent company of HBO who broadcasts Maher's show, demanding the cancellation of same.  Donohue is also sending a copy of a report listing 54 anti-Catholic statements made by Maher on TV.  The Catholic League is not really a 'league' at all, rather it is just Bill Donohue and a few staff members whose mission it is to obstruct Marriage Equality and any other LGBT Civil Rights issue.  Both Savage and Maher were raised in the Catholic church and have moved beyond the hate and hypocrisy espoused by Priests, Bishops and Cardinals.  Donohue's position on the matter is ludicrous at best.  You should actually read the list. Aside from being humorous, that the jokes can actually be made by Maher and Donohue is unable to refute those that aren’t just jokes, but real accusations, it’s extremely embarrassing for Donohue to advertise it at all.  I really don't think HBO (or Time-Warner for that matter) is going to drop the very popular show from its lineup because one nut job took umbrage at the truth being spoken.  All I can say is if Bill Donohue cannot take the heat, then he damn well better stay out of the kitchen.  I don't think either Bill Maher or Dan Savage have lost any sleep over the blatant blathering of an anti-Gay Bigot.  I surely would not if I were them.
