Today marks the beginning of Musikfest Berlin which celebrates the world of classical music and runs until the 18th of September. The opening concert is tomorrow night at the Philharmonie in Berlin with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conducted by Manfred Honeck featuring Anne-Sophie Mutter as the Violin Soloist. The concert will be broadcast live and free of charge over the Internet via the Digital Concert Hall at 8 PM Berlin time (1PM Texas time). Below are the Program Notes for the concert:
Musikfest Berlin, organized by the Berliner Festspiele and the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation, is one of the most important European festivals. International orchestras, conductors and soloists come together to present the great works of the repertoire as well as new works and discoveries. You can follow the opening concert on 31 August live and free of charge in the Digital Concert Hall. Manfred Honeck conducts the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the soloist in Witold Lutosławski’s Chain II is Anne-Sophie Mutter.
It is over a quarter of a century ago that Anne-Sophie Mutter premiered Witold Lutosławski’s Łańcuch II (“Chain II”). Already then it seemed as if a new chapter in the history of concert music had been opened at a single stroke. And the unbroken force of fascination that Lutosławski’s composition has had on interpreters as well as audiences since then has proven this assumption correct.
That Anne-Sophie Mutter, as the first and without a doubt the most well-versed interpreter of this composition, will perform at Musikfest Berlin 2013 is one of the highlights of a programme that, along with other focal points, is dedicated to Lutosławski’s 100th birthday. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and conductor Manfred Honeck will accompany this exceptional violinist in this concert. Also to be heard are an early string suite by Leoš Janáček and Richard Strauss’ autobiographical tone poem Ein Heldenleben (“A Hero’s Life”).

Your Musical Moment for today features the Violin Concerto in D Major, Opus 77 by Johannes Brahms. The classic 1960 performance is by The Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Eugene Ormandy and features Isaac Stern as the Violin Soloist.
