Now There Are 11+

The 'First State' Delaware was the place to be for good news regarding Marriage Equality yesterday as the Senate passed the bill in a 12-9 vote.  The debate was more of the same from the anti-equality folks reiterating the same tired bull shit over and over again.  Fair minded legislators were still in the majority, so the anti-equality folks lost another one.  Delaware Senator Karen Peterson came out as a lesbian publicly for the first time in making her arguments in support of Marriage Equality to her colleagues saying:  “My partner Vicki and I have been together for 24 years. Last year, we entered into a civil union. If my happiness somehow demeans or diminishes your marriage, you need to work on your marriage,” Senator Peterson noted, to laughter, adding, ”We don’t need to be fixed. We’re not broken.  No one chose to be gay. We are what God made us. We’re not seeking to redefine marriage, but to expand it, just as Loving v. Virginia did,” Peterson said.  Congratulations to Senator Peterson for coming out publicly.  Then in a surprise move, just minutes after the Senate passed the bill for Marriage Equality, Governor Jack Markell signed the bill into law before it even left the Senate Chamber saying “I do not intend to make any of you wait 1 minute longer!"  Let the celebrations begin as for the second time in 5 days we add another state to those progressive states which recognize the rights of LGBT citizens to unite in a legally recognized marriage.  This makes 11 states plus the District of Columbia with Marriage Equality.

There could be more states before SCOTUS rules on DOMA and Prop 8 as the Minnesota Legislature is set to take up the Marriage Equality bill there on Thursday, and the Illinois Legislature is getting closer to a vote for Marriage Equality there.  It has been a great week for Equality, as we take further steps along the path to expand the Civil Rights of LGBT citizens.  Let's keep up the pressure and drive the forces of darkness, denigration, division and delay further back until they just go away completely.

Your Musical Moment today is part one of a two part Musical Moment featuring music of Antonio Vivaldi from the Decca Classics CD of Bassoon Concerti.  Included in the play list are Bassoon Concerto in A minor, R.497, Bassoon Concerto in C, R.473, Bassoon Concerto in G, R.493, Bassoon Concerto in C, R.471, Bassoon Concerto in A minor, R.500, Bassoon Concerto in D minor, R.481, Bassoon Concerto in B flat, R.504 and Bassoon Concerto in G minor, R.496.  The performance today is by I Musici featuring Klaus Thunemann on Solo Bassoon.
