It was a wild and wooly night around the store last night. I normally do not work on Wednesdays, however I did last night to make up the hours I missed on Sunday night when I took off to watch what turned out to be a miserable Cowboy game in which they lost to arch rival Washington 28-18. Because of the New Year's Day holiday, the truck we normally get on Tuesday came on Wednesday instead. My coworker and I were making some good progress on getting things done until about 2:30 when it all went to hell in a hand basket. Captain Rodericks of the FWPD was there for his dinner break as well as another officer when a young man came in to buy a couple of things and some gas. The only problem was he paid with what turned out to be a fairly good counterfeit $20 bill. I discovered the funny money when I tried to insert the bill into my safe which has a detector for it. The Captain pursued the man but by the time he got to his vehicle and gave chase, he managed to elude the Captain, disappearing into the surrounding neighborhood. The night went down hill from there. It seems to be a law of nature that the more things you have to do, the more the ne'er do wells are apt to come in and fuck with us.
For the rest of the night it was one step forward and 3 steps back. Along about 4:30, a 'lady' was waiting to use the restroom (we have only one and it is a single occupancy room) when all of the sudden she seemed to disappear. My coworker discovered the woman in our soda room where all the bag in the boxes for the fountain are and where we store the various cups for drinks. The woman was squatting and peeing on the floor. He made her mop up her mess but we had to clear out the room and sanitize it with bleach lest any bacteria would make its way in to the fountain system. All the while it seemed that everyone in the neighborhood just had to come get some coffee or a soda and the morning rush started early. So the 1 step forward and 3 steps back continued to the end of the shift. I did manage to catch up on the food prep I usually do around 4:30 around a quarter to 6, but I still had the dishes to do after the day shift arrived and we did the shift change.
I was pretty frustrated at this point, but the day shift showed on time and my coworker was going to stay to finish putting up all the products I had scanned and priced while serving wave after wave of customers. I went to enter the shift change data into the MOT (Mobil Operations Terminal, basically a tablet computer that hooks into our ISP). I ran into a problem there as the dunderhead on Second Shift entered his data where I was supposed to enter our data, so we had to go to the main ISP and correct his fuck up before I could put in my correct data. Just the icing on the cake, I suppose. It never ceases to amaze me that things can get so botched up in so little time, day after day after day. I really thinks sometimes I am getting too old for this shit. Anyway, I am now home but have to head out here shortly to do the pay day chore and errand thing. No rest for the wicked I suppose. But for now on to more pleasant things like the music and the men.
Your musical interlude for today is Piano Sonata Number 6 in D Minor, Opus 124 by Carl Czerny. Written in the year of Beethoven's death, this massive sonata is in multi-movements just like the master's late string quartets. Very heroic and a lot of memorable material with a masterful performance by Martin Jones. The movements are I. Introduzione: Adagio sostenuto ed espressivo - 00:00, I. Capriccio Appasionata: Allegro energico - 3:03, II. Allegretto con moto, vivace ma serioso - 15:30, III. Scherzo & Trio: Presto - 23:19, IV. Chorale der Böhmen - 26:10, V. Presto scherzando - 38:11 and VI. Finale: Allegro con fuoco - 41:38.
