Welcome to the weekend and this week's review of the Best of the Web This Week! I have some 99 photographs of some really studly guys for you all to ogle as you travel down the page. To give you the perfect accompaniment and close out this week's featured composers whose last name begins with the letter 'S', I have a terrific playlist that will do quite admirably. The play list has three Number 1 works by Dimitri Shostakovich. The first piece is the
Cello Concerto No. 1 in E Flat Major, Opus 107, written by Shostakovich
in 1959 for Mstislav Rostropovich, who memorized the work in four days.
This first recording was made for the CBS label by Rostropovich
accompanied by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy in
November of 1959. The second piece is his Symphony Number 1 with a
2006 performance by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of
Valery Gergiev. Finally, Dmitri Shostakovich's son, Maxim Shostakovich
conducts Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Minor which is performed by Maxim's
son, Dmitri Shostakovich Jr. and accompanied by the I Musici de
Montreal. I think that should fill the bill and end the week with a real bang. Thanks for the visit and we will see you again on Monday! Until next time as always, Enjoy!
