I am running a bit behind this morning as seems to be the case more often than not lately. Of course it did not help that I did not get off work until 7:30 either. However I will eventually catchup to myself one of these days. My reading list is so long that I cannot see the end of it and I won't make much headway on that today as it is chore and shopping day so I will be otherwise occupied all day. I may get the night off tonight but I will not know that until a little later today. Nothing like not being able to plan because you don't know if you're working or not. At any rate you didn't come here to hear me bitch about work, so let's move on to the good stuff. For music today I have chosen a symphony by the Italian composer, pianist and teacher, Giuseppe Martucci. Martucci was unusual in his generation in that he never wrote an opera, instead concentrating on orchestral works and teaching. One of his students of note was composer Ottorino Raspighi. His music was also championed by the great conductor, Arturo Toscanini. The symphony I have chosen today is his Number 2 in F Major, Opus 81 written in 1904 and this performance is by the Philharmonia Orchestra of London under the baton of Francesco D'Avalos from a 1989 recording. Although it occupied him for over five years, and is the only large-scale work of his last decade, the Second Symphony (1904) has claims to being Martucci's masterpiece. He conducted the première in Milan on 11 December 1904 and several times thereafter, but it was also taken up by Arturo Toscanini, whose advocacy was to remain unstinting throughout Toscanini's career. While listening to this wonderful piece of music, you can scroll down the page where you will find this week's collection of mucho macho Men in Jeans for your visual appreciation. Thanks for the visit. see you again tomorrow. Until next time as always, Enjoy!
