Molokini Crater, Maui, Hawaii
I had a rather unique experience for these modern times yesterday. One of the joys of living in a small town in America is there are usually old fashioned professional services available locally at a reasonable price. While we have our fair share of modern amenities here in NLR, we do still retain the small town feel in many sections of the River Cities. I have been here since the first of March and have no had my hair cut since arriving. I am kind of picky when it comes to my hair (big surprise, lol) and did not have a clue as to wher to get a good haircut. One of the men whose hair is always immaculately groomed is our GM. So I asked him where he had his cut. Our GM is in his seventies so I figured he might have a clue as to where to find an actual barber shop and not a style salon. He had a recommendation for me which was located on the bus route just about 2 miles from the hotel. Thus when I got off work yesterday I set out ot seek and find said barber shop and get my hair cut.
When I was a child, hair cuts were done on Saturday mornings with Dad down at Fox's Barber Shop. Mr Fox had been cutting Dad's hair for years and he was glad to welcome new members into the sacred rituals of the tonsorial fraternity. Tonsorial by definition is anything having to do with or referring to barbers or barbering. I remember he would always do the hot lather around the ears and neck line just like he would do Dad's and use the straight razor to trim any excess hair at no charge just because I wanted a haircut just like Dad's. There was always the smell of pipe tobacco and cigarettes. Field and Stream and Sports Illustraded in the magazine rack along with Life and Look. It was a man's world given to political discussions and humor that was marvelous and fascinating for a curious child who got on better with adults than children. I was reminded of that experience when I walked into this little three chair shop where I was greeted warmly by the owner. There was Field and Stream, and Sports Illustrated, although Life and Look have been replaced with Time and Newsweek. There was the concession to the kids with the toys in the corner and of course there were old men there chewing the fat as if it was still 1959. I got good conversation and the best hair cut I have had in years. For all the fancy techniques and processes available at a style salon, they just don't know jack about using a pair of clippers to do a businessman's cut and taper. I have tried for several years to find someone who understands what I mean and could not. This man knew what I meant without having to explain anything. This guy nailed it on the first try and it looks and feels great. I know the ladies among my readers enjoy their time at the salon (we called them beauty parlors way back when) but there is something comforting about getting in a real barber chair with the leather strops on the side and chewing the fat with the barber as he cuts your hair, then does the hot lather and trim thing. He even sent a message back to my GM ( I had told him how I came to find him) "Thank you for the new customer, do not expect any commission!" which got a laugh out of my GM. In this age of metrosexuality and spa treatments for men, it was a joy to experience a little old fashion barber service at the hands of a professional barber. So you will know the difference, a true barber has to have 500 additional hours of training to acquire their licenses as opposed to those with a cosmotology license. I enjoyed my visit and will return again and again. I don't have much hair, but the hair I do have continues to grow (everywhere except where I want it to!). If you guys have never been to a barber shop, unlike your local Fantastic Sam's or SuperCuts, then you should really seek one out for the experience. It will give you an new look and an fresh look at life all in a half hour or so.
In the entertainment aisle today we have 10 Holly Oaks videos in a custom player for you Mid June Update followed by the eye candy selections I picked out for yesterday's post which did not make it to press. This was because I fell asleep at the keyboard after I picked out the pictures and did not get around to actually writing this until this morning. So forgive Uncle for being lazy or just tired, but I have been working seven days a week, so a little tiredness catches up with me every once in a while. Until next time as always, Enjoy!
