You guys remember when I was having problems with Blog This in my Picasa2 application? I figured out the problem was not with Picasa but with IE. When I up graded to X P Pro I failed to allow Picas2's cookies in IE, so Picasa2 could not log me in. As I use FF@ almost exclusively as a browser, I sometimes forget about the conspiracy of Microsoft and Google to corner the Geek Money Market and the pernicious little ways they like to f@#% with those of us who are not fans of their work. Anyway, when I allowed the cookies , suddenly google and Picasa2 worked just fine. But heat is not the reason I am writing this tonight, I have a tale much more frustratingly real to relate about the struggles of yours truly and Geekdom Almighty in the personas of Microsoft, Compaq and Hewlett Packard.
As those of you who have been keeping up with my adventure in starting a new business with the moving company know, I have been in the middle of a systems upgrade to facilitate our growth and ability to better serve our customers. My partner and I have recently purchased a state of the art software package by a company out of Florida by the name of Moverworx. The software suite allows us to accurately price the moves and coordinate their performance as well as track all relevant data related to the business. The suite also exports all accounting data directly into quick books which makes bookkeeping simple and direct. In order to install the software suite, we had to purchase a new computer to act as a dedicated server so that all of us involved can access the various facets of the software relevant to our particular part of the operation. As the General Manager and Network Administrator, I have the privilege of learning everything there is to know and teaching it to all the others involved in our operation. In the purchase of the new computer lies the adventure in which I was embroiled for most of the last days and which came very close to utter collapse before a simple solution presented itself to solve the problems with which we were confronted.
Now in as much as I love the upgrades I have done to my personal computer and the Sprint mobile broadband modem with which I connect to the Internet, my system and connection are not up to the standard necessary for use as a server and facilitation of remote access and website integration. So my partner and I decided to purchas a new computer to set up in his home with a DSL connection through a cable modem. The only problem with a new machine is the fact that Bill Gates and Microsoft have finagled the manufacturer's into packaging new desktops and laptops exclusively with the new Vista operating system which is compatible with next to nothing of relevance to a professional computing environment. As a matter of fact, our new Moverworx software suite will not work with Vista and requires X P Professional as an operating environment as well as a Static I P Address to facilitate website integration. So having purchased a new Compaq Presario 5027CL to act as our server, we had to uninstall vista and install X P Pro in order to install Moverworx. Therein lies a tale of woe that I will not soon forget. By installing X P Pro on to the new Presario, not only did I void any warranty, but the drivers necessary for the ethernet connection, sound and graphics cards, PCI bridge and serial bus controllers are incompatible with an XP Pro environment and no drivers are available from the manufacturer (Compaq) the mother company (HP) or the devil incarnate (Microsoft). So I had a lightning fast processor with a gig of RAM and 250 gigs of hard drive that were absolutely useless because I could not connect to the Internet either directly or remotely which meant I was basically screwed as Moverworx could not be installed or accessed on the new machine. I spent hours and hours online and on the telephone with the Devil Incarnate and his Minions only to be told time and again, the drivers were not compatible with my environment and the environment that was compatible with tthe drivers was not comapatible with my software. I sat there thinking I had just thrown away 9 or 10 thousand dollars of my partner's money and had just a pretty box and a couple of shiny CD's to show for it. By Monday morning I was ready to kill Bill Gates or throw him across a cross buck fence and let some big muscle stud have his way with him as punishment for his sins against me. My partner then suggested I call the electronics heaven where we bought the computer to see if they had a possible solution to the dilemma with which we were faced. After being transferred from one department to the next, the guy at the service desk suggested I purchase an after market ethernet card with an X P Pro compatible driver CD, install that and see what happens. I asked how much that would cost me and was told at most $20 plus tax. I could have kissed that man if I would have been within arm's reach instead of on the phone I probably would have. At any rate, I took his advice and voila, Internet connectivity and installation possibility. Now my sound card and gaming graphics card strill do not work, but are unnecessary for the computers use as a server anyway, so that does not bother me. Basically though I got to say F@#% you Bill Gates and the Vista he and his minions rode in on because I was not forced to accede to their demands for money to converse or abandon the software necessary to make a success of my and my partner's company by repurchasing and installing the Vista operating system in order to be able to use the PCI devices built into the computer. And it only cost me $20 and a 100 hours of frustration. It was well worth the price. There is still the small glitch of the Static I P address to solve, but we are working around it and looking into solutions right now and I am sure the answers will come. So now we are positioned for success, all I have to do is apply the energy necessary to make it come to fruition of which I am more than ready, willing and able to do.
Now just a short note on the resignation of Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General. In his remarks on the turn of events, His majesty Emperor George called Gonzales an "Honorable man". I have but two questions for his majesty:
1) Since when did lying, obstruction of justice and perjury before Congress make you an "Honorable man"?
2) Why is not this motherf@#%er on his way to jail where he belongs?
And to end up on a pleasaqnt note, I have a short but beautiful eye candy section featuring the works of Biron, one of my favorite photographers. The photos are of the model Mebinchi. He just today sent me these photos so I present them to you for your perusal. Until next time as always, Enjoy!
