Adventures In Computing

The days get curiouser and curiouser as I learn my way through the world of computer hosts and servers, fluid and static I P addresses, and software installations. At one point today I was ready to kill, at another I was ready to cry. As the day ended though, I had made miles of progress as well as traveled many physical miles in the process of solving the dilemma with which I was confronted. As it turns out, even with the improvements that I have made in my computer hardware, it is still not up to the standard required for what I need for the moving company. After about four hours of trying to get the server software installed, the software company, my partner and I had a conference and came up with some options for action. One option was to travel to my partner's residence to investigate the system he had sitting around there. The only problem with that option is his home is in west B F E and we had to travel there at traffic time in 96 degree weather in a car with no A C. Then we had a flat on the way. Ahh the struggles of budding entrepreneurs or should I say AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

When we finally arrived in west B F E, the system he had was also not up to the task, so my partner said f*** it, go to Fry's and get what we need. So I talked to the techno geek that was my nemesis yesterday and wrote down the requirements and got the budget and the AMEX from my partner and headed out. I arrived at Fry's electronic heaven and proceeded to shop. I asked the advice of the best looking of the techno geeks in the computer department and found the perfect machine that was within the budgetary limitations I had been given. It has a 2.1 gig mhz Athlon processor, 1 gig of ram, 250 gig hard drive and a DVD burner. With that and a KVM switch, I was ready to set up a network at home with my present computer being a host and the new one being the server. I had it all in the cart and headed for the checkout where surprisingly there was no line. The cute little cashier told me the total and I whipped out the AMEX to pay, and of all thing this electronic heaven does not accept AMEX! The VISA I had with me did not have the space available for the purchase so I had them put my selections in will call and my partner and I will take his VISA out there in the morning and complete the purchase.

That solves part of the dilemma, I still needed to provide a static I P address for the server. As I live in a hotel, the option of DSL is not open to me, that is why I got the Sprint Sierra Wireless card for Internet access, but it provides fluid I P addresses. Luckily after consulting with Sprint, they told me about a company that provides a software solution. The software basically provides a static I P Address and the program redirects inquiries to that address to whatever I P Address the wireless card is signed onto at the moment, constantly monitoring that so there is never a lost inquiry. All of that for a most reasonable cost. So I bought it and that solved the dilemma.

There is still some work to do as the new machine is loaded with Vista which the new software will not work with, but I just purchased the XP Pro disc so I can load that on there download the emulation software and voila I will be ready for the software installation and I can get on to my job as Sales manager to pay for all this s*** I just bought. So for all the crap that I went through trying to get the ball rolling, it turned out the adventure was worth it in the end.

So tomorrow will be another busy day and it is getting late. I will leave you something to dream about and head off to dreamland myself. Until next time as always, Enjoy!
