Happy Birthday, Haydn!

Today we pay tribute to Mozart's friend and Beethoven's teacher, Franz Joseph Haydn, who was born on this day in 1732.  He is known both as the 'Father of the Symphony' of which he wrote more than 100 and as the 'Father of the String Quartet'.  Haydn spent more than 30 years isolated on the country estate of the Esterhazy Princes by whom he was employed.  He was 'forced' to be original and yet his influence went far beyond Schloss Esterhazy.  In Vienna and two trips to London, Haydn was the most celebrated of Composers, the darling of his day.

In celebration of the 383 anniversary of his birth, we have his Opus 1 String Quartets Numbers 1, 2 and 3 performed by the The Aeolian String Quartet: Emanuel Hurwitz & Raymond Keenlyside - Violins; Margaret Major - Viola and Derek Simpson - Cello.  Over on my tumblr you may hear his "London" Symphony Number 104 in D Major performed by the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra under Adam Fischer.

Then to brighten all our days, check out the Random Hotness down below and the Hottie of the Day! over on my tumblr.  Thanks for the visit, see you again soon.  Until next time as always, Enjoy!
