The Dallas Cowboys had the weekend off, so I indulged myself in the opportunity to observe how the other teams in the NFC East and around the league fared in their games. In New York, the Giants hosted the SF 49ers in a game neither team seemed to want to win. The 49ers eeked out a 16-10 victory mostly due to the largess of Giants QB Eli Manning who threw 5 interceptions. Eli's brother Peyton did not fare much better, throwing 2 interceptions en route to the lowest point total of the Manning era in Denver, losing in St Louis to the resurgent Rams 22-7. The Giants next host the Cowboys on next week's Sunday Night Football.
Just down I95 from New York in the nations capitol, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were hosted by the home town Redskins. The Redskins faithful were heartily disillusioned at the end of the embarrassing 27-7 loss to the Buccaneers, previously winners of but a single game this season. This left the 'Skins at 3-7 and wondering if they were even that good, definitely a team in disarray.
The Philadelphia Eagles should have stayed in Philly over the weekend instead of making the trek to Wisconsin and the frozen tundra of storied Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers. Philly QB Mark Sanchez looked more like the guy the Jets released than the savior of the day playing in place of the injured Nick Foles. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers scored at will against the strength of the Eagles, their defense, thoroughly dismantling the Eagles 53-20. The Packers set a club record in scoring 50 or more points in consecutive weeks. The Eagles who fell into a first place tie with the Cowboys at 7-3 come to Dallas on Thanksgiving, hopefully to get stuffed like the proverbial holiday turkey
In other action around the league, the Arizona Cardinals, even without injured QB Carson Palmer out lasted the Detroit Lions 14-6 retaining their league best record at 9-1. They next travel to SF to meet up with their division rival 49ers who along with the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks are 3 games back of the Cardinals. Seattle traveled to Arrowhead Stadium in KC, losing to the hometown Chiefs 24-20. The Chiefs on the season are 7-3, tied with Denver for the AFC West lead, and have beaten both last years SB teams, Seattle and Denver. They also dismantled the 8-2 New England Patriots earlier this season on MNF, 41-14 and meet up with the league leading Cardinals the first weekend in December. The Patriots held their end up, looking unstoppable in Indianapolis where they ripped the Colts 42-20.
The most hapless division in all of the NFL is undoubtedly the NFC South where there are no teams playing 500 or better football. The Atlanta Falcons lead that division with a 4-6 record by virtue of the fact that their 4 wins were all against the other teams in their division. Outside the NFC South, Atlanta is winless. This brings up the possibility of the division champion making it into the playoffs with a losing record for the first time in NFL history. I don't expect anyone in this division to make it past the Wild Card round without a divine miracle or two. With 6 games left this season, everyone in this division is looking to next year already. The only other team in the NFL whose outlook is worse than the teams in the NFC South happens to be the Oakland Raiders who are winless on the season. Their losing streak extends into last season to number 16 losses in a row making it a whole year since this once proud and feared franchise has shown any hope of victory at all. That only leaves one game to be played yet this week, the Pittsburgh Steelers meet up with the Tennessee Titans on MNF tonight. Division Standings and the Playoff Picture as it stands this week cna be found by clicking on the links.
