During my time in the Navy, I served aboard the aircraft carrier USS America. In the last stages of the Viet Nam War, the America was deployed there and carried out 24 hour a day flight operations. I worked below deck in the computer room and my berthing compartment was right below the computer room. Next to my berth was a catapult steam trunk, basically a pipe about 2 foot in diameter that charged up at 1200 PSI every two minutes to power one of the catapults that launches planes off the flight deck. I am sure most of you are familiar with the sound of a steam radiator makes when it is powering up. Take that sound and multiply it by about 100 and you will have approximately the roar a steam trunk makes when it is charging. Not only was it extremely loud, it shook the room. This went on for the whole year I was in Viet Nam. This resulted in what the Navy termed a bilateral hearing loss. I was never compensated for this loss and have lived with it lo these many years since that time.
Today, I have an appointment at the VA to get my hearing tested at 8 AM. The results of these tests may result in the prescription of hearing aids and possibly some percentage of disability for which I may be compensated. Even if I do not receive any compensation, the prescription of hearing aids would be a very welcome addition to my health care. I will let you know how this all turns out as the results become available.
