Monday News and Notes

I took some time over the weekend to do a little decorating for Christmas both here and over on my tumblr to help get you into the holiday spirit.  I also spent some time wondering around the web and have a few things I thought I would share with you today.

We begin on a sad note  with the untimely death of hottie actor Paul Walker on Saturday.  Walker was a passenger in his friend's (Roger Rodas) Porche Carrera GT when the driver lost control and smashed into a tree in Santa Clarita.  The Porche burst into flames and exploded burning both Rodas and Walker beyond recognition.  Coroners are awaiting dental records before doing autopsies.  Walker is survived by his 15 year old daughter, Meadow.  My condolences to the family and friends of Paul Walker, he will be missed.

On a brighter note, hunky Olympic medalist diver Tom Daley revealed over the weekend that he is in a romantic relationship with a man.  Daley came out via a video posted to his You Tube page.  In his video Tom says "I didn't want to get my words twisted.  I wanted to put an end to all the rumours and speculation. My friends and family are always there to support me. I'm still Tom, I still want to win an Olympic gold medal in Rio in 2016 for Great Britain."  Well Done, Tom.  We will be watching in Rio and rooting for you!

In a recent article on Atlantic Media's The Wire, Army Specialist Mike Merrill, an OutServe/SLDN Member stationed in Texas, tells his compelling story about coming out in a combat unit in a post DADT army.  While not without his trials, the story does have a happy ending as he tells OS/SLDN in a message last week.  "Thank you for what you do on our behalf. I am where I am today in part thanks to those in the OutServe group from the Fort Hood area. As a result of my article being posted, my battalion commander asked me for information that would be of benefit to other LGBT soldiers so that it can be made publicly available for their benefit. I have marched with OutServe in a couple parades and it has been an honor to march. Though the reporter did not include OutServe directly in the article as I had asked...it [OS/SLDN] is being presented to my brigade as a resource for LGBT soldiers. It's a small step in the right direction, and I'm proud to be able in a small way to highlight the excellent work that you each do."  Thank you, Mike, for your service to our country and using your experience to reach out and help other young gay men, soldiers or not, to realize that being Gay does not stop you from being 'all you can be!'.

Congratulation are in order for the LGBT citizens of the Aloha state as Marriage Equality took effect at 12:01 AM this morning.  Shortly after that, six same-sex couples began to exchange their vows at a festive, historic celebration on the 30th floor of the Sheraton Waikiki.  It was not the only marriage celebration Monday in Hawaii. The Rev. Dr. Jonipher Kupono Kwong, who has performed many weddings during his 10 years in the ministry — both for opposite and same-gender couples — also tied the knot with his long time partner Chris Nelson.  Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie attended their ceremony at First Unitarian Church of Honolulu in Nuuanu.  After 20 years of activists pursuing Marriage Equality in Hawaii, today is the culmination of all their efforts.  I wish happiness and marital bliss to all the couples who celebrate their vows on this historic day and the days to come.

In keeping with the Spirit of the Season, I will post my regular Monday With Mozart feature on my tumblr and bring you Sounds of the Season on Mondays from now until Christmas.  Today's Sounds of the Season is a short but sensational set from The Piano Guys
