I what would turn out to be the highest scoring game in Dallas Cowboys history, an epic shootout was held before more than 98,000 exuberant fans in the Taj Ma Jones (ATT Stadium) on Sunday. The Denver Bronco and Peyton Manning came into the game considered by many to be the best team in football this season, however the Cowboys gave them almost more than they could handle. The Cowboys built a 17-7 lead before Manning and the Broncos got untracked in the second quarter to take a 28-20 lead into halftime. The second half became a track meet with several lead changes. The Broncos went up 38-27, then the Cowboys tied it up at 41. The Cowboys pulled ahead at 48-41 before Manning and the Broncos tied it up at 48-48 with two and a half minutes left in the game. This put the Cowboys in a position to run out the clock, kick a last second field goal and win the game. Fate then stepped in when the Broncos pulled off a diving interception at the Cowboys 25 yard line. Peyton Manning then milked the rest of the clock and it was the Broncos who kicked the last second field goal to win the game.
There was no defense on either side and over 1000 yards of offense as Tony Romo set a Cowboys record for passing yards in a game with 506 yards and 5 Touchdowns. The only defensive bright spot was Peyton Manning's first interception of the season, however Tony Romo's lone interception in the fourth quarter sealed the Cowboys fate. The Cowboys showed their powerhouse potential but their defensive flaws were exposed by Manning's usual precision at picking apart a defense. It was the ultimate exciting game, however it was also ultimately disappointing for the Cowboys. The Cowboys retained first place in the NFC East, even with the loss, but that was little consolation to loyal Cowboy fans. This one will be talked about for a long time, and it will be a pain to remember what could have been.
