Minnesota Makes 12

The Minnesota Senate voted to approve the Marriage Equality bill before it in a 37-30 vote.  The gallery surrounding the Senate chamber erupted into cheers and applause when the result was announced.  Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton will sign the bill into law in a ceremony on the steps of the State Capitol today at 5 PM CDT.  Minnesota is the first midwestern state to approve Marriage Equality by legislative fiat instead of a court order.  Minnesota becomes the 12th state with Marriage Equality along with the District of Columbia.  This is amazing progress as just 6 months ago, there was a knockdown, drag out fight going on the proposal to amend the Minnesota Constitution to ban Marriage Equality.  In the testimony phase before the vote, there were two very emotional statements made by Senator Tom Bakk, a straight ally and Senator Scott Dibble, Minnesota's only Out Gay Senator.  Video of their emotional testimonies can be seen by clicking on the links above.   This makes 3 states in 11 days that have opted for Marriage Equality with one more possible (Illinois) before the Supreme Court announces its rulings in the Prop 8 and DOMA cases in June.  Couples may begin celebrating their vows on August 1.  Congratulations to all those who have worked so hard to make Equal Love available to all Minnesotans.

Your Musical Moment for today features the music of Francesco Barsanti with his 6 Concerti for 2 Violins, Viola, Cello and 2 Basses from the Sonate Notturne, Opus 6, di Giovanni Battista Sammartini.  Included in the play list are Concerto I in G major, Concerto II in A major, Concerto III in E major, Concerto IV in G major, Concerto V in A major and Concerto VI in E major.  Today's performance is by Banchetto Musicale
