One of the 'Notes' in yesterday's post referred to the celebrations surrounding the Marriage Equality bill being signed into law in Minnesota. The celebrations continue, as well they should, including this beautiful tribute by the City of Minneapolis which lit the I35W bridge over the Mississippi River leading into the city with an array of Rainbow colored lights. The I35W bridge is most famous for collapsing back in 2007 but has since been refurbished and strengthened and I think I would rather remember it for the Rainbow lights celebrating Marriage Equality. Bailey Bradford left a comment stating that she wished Texas would step up like Minnesota did. I wish they would too, however I am not going to hold my breath until it happens. Unfortunately there are still too many persons of the Wing Nut variety holding to their bigoted beliefs for Marriage Equality to gain much of a foothold here. A good example of the Wing Nuttery here in Texas is Richard Sheridan who was running for Dallas City Council in last Saturday's election. He lost badly (Thank God!!!), managing to only gather 28 votes placing him dead last. He felt he had to blame someone, and he focused on D Magazine reporter Dan Koller. Sheridan left a vulgar rant on Koller's voice mail laced with homophobic slurs as well as numerous obscenities because Sheridan thought that Koller did not emphasize the fact enough that the second place finisher, Leland Burk, was Gay. Dallas has a good record when it comes to electing openly Gay candidates and has a thriving Gay community although Mr Burk did not win this election. The point being that Texas still comes up a day late and a dollar short when it comes to the civil rights of its LGBT population despite the thriving communities in major cities like Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth and Dallas or for that matter the Lawrence v Texas Supreme Court Ruling that invalidated sodomy laws nationwide. I don't think I will see Marriage Equality come to my home state in my lifetime, but hell, I did not think I would ever hear a sitting President endorse Gay Marriage or the LGBT Right to Serve Openly in the military either. One can never tell, and for sure I will not stop fighting the good fight for Equality here in Texas as long as I can draw breath and wave a Rainbow flag in the faces of the bigoted buffoons who run this state.
