The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America is holding their annual meetings the first three days of this week in the Dallas suburb of Irving at their National Headquarters. Prominent on the agenda is an upcoming vote on whether or not to rescind the national ban on Gay Scouts and Leaders. Those organizations on the Religious Right are having Hissy Fits all over the nation at the effrontery of the National Council to even consider altering the long standing 'moral standard' espoused by the BSA for lo these many years. It is not so much the National Council has had a softening of the heart towards the Gays, however they have come to realize that their blatant discrimination has cost them some mega bucks from the world of Corporate Sponsorship. A lot of Corporations that have previously funded the BSA now have non-discrimination policies that include LGBT persons which they feel prohibit their contributions to an entity that blatantly discriminates against persons under that policy. The National Council is trying to slip one past the Corporate Sponsors by 'leaving it up to the local Councils, Troops and Packs' to decide if they want to continue the discrimination. That way they can say on the one hand that they do not discriminate while in fact they allow that discrimination by the local Councils, Troops and Packs by looking the other way when they do discriminate. I agree rescinding the ban is the right thing to do, but I disagree that it will not be binding on the local Councils, Troops and Packs. It smacks of smile in your face while stabbing you in the back for the sake of money. The BSA National Council should not half step, rather they should rescind the ban and make it binding on the locals as well as the National Council. They should not be able to say 'we don't discriminate- nod, nod, wink, wink' when in fact they still do, just not as a National Policy. They do not want to respect the Gays, they just want the money. I think that it is very sad indeed to see such a venerable institution stoop to such fakery in the name of greed no matter who is throwing the Hissy Fits over it. Those throwing the Hissy Fits long ago lost their right to 'moral indignation' by espousing hatred and bigotry in the name of 'loving religious beliefs'. I would hope the BSA does the right thing, but I am not going to hold my breath while waiting to see if they do.
