Happy New Year to one and all. As good as 2012 was for us folks of the LGBT persuasion, 2013 has the potential to be even better. For starters, we are more equal this year than last with Marriage Equality now in three additional states. Marylanders started the year off right celebrating with wedding ceremonies this morning as soon as it was legal to do so. With the Supreme Court due to hear both Prop 8 and DOMA cases in this session, by mid summer we might be able to add California back into the Marriage Equality corral while adding Federal recognition to all our marriages. I long for the day when it will be just Marriage with no genderfication whatsoever. Mean while in Illinois, they are making all the right sounds to get Marriage Equality off and running before their current session ends this month. I would say even at this early stage, our year is getting off to a great start.

2013 is the Year of the Snake in the Chinese Horoscope:
"Ancient Chinese wisdom says a Snake in the house is a good omen because it means your family will not starve. This could be taken metaphorically to mean that a Snake could never have a problem with his family starving because he is such a great mediator, making him good at business. Or it could mean that a Snake would be willing to sacrifice his possessions, something the Snake has a lot of, in order to pay for his family’s food. Any way it is interpreted is representative of the Snake’s character and is a measure of the value he puts on his material wealth. The Snake is keen and cunning, quite intelligent and wise."
I hope a little of that intelligence and wisdom rubs off on SCOTUS so that they rule in favor of fairness and equality for all people, no matter their 'persuasion'. I hope I live to see the day when Marriage Equality is the law of the land in all the states. It may be a forlorn hope in places like Texas, Alabama or Mississippi, but eventually, all the neanderthal nut jobs will pass on to their reward with the more rational younger generations leading the way to a brighter future for us all.
I would love to see James Dobson's face when Saint Peter pulls the trap door and sends him to his own special hell with out passing go or collecting his 200 dollars. I imagine it would be a look similar to Jerry Fallwell's when Saint Peter told him his reward was to be reincarnated as a penniless deaf mute destined to work in the scullery of a Gay Hotel somewhere that is paradise for the guests and hell for him. Am I wicked or what? Probably the 'or what' but I digress. All of this is just to say in the words of the late great Harvey Milk, "You gotta give em Hope" because I have high hopes that our level of Equality will draw ever ever nearer to reality rather than being so far away. Mentioning Brothers Jerry and James reminds me of something my Mother said during our Christmas visit about hating people who are only Christian from the mouth out and not the heart inward. There does seem to be a lot of that going around lately (Tony Perkins, Bryan Fischer, Matt Barber and all those folks at NOM?). I guess my bottom line is we have that Hope Candle alight and it is glowing brighter than ever before.
