For the second weekend in a row, the NFL and one of its teams faced a challenging game in their hopes for a playoff berth while reeling from the impact of the death of one of their team mates the day before the game. For the Dallis Cowboys this week, the weekend took its turn to the tragic when in the early in the morning hours on Saturday two friends, college roommates and now fellow team mates on the Cowboys were returning from a night on the town, neither of them made it home. Nose Tackle Joel Nash, while driving under the influence, hit a curb and flipped his vehicle, landing in the middle of the road upside down. His friend and team mate, Linebacker Jerry Brown, Jr did not survive the accident. Nash was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter for which he posted bail late Sunday Afternoon. While the remainder of the team made the flight to Cincinnati on time, it was a very somber group of young men on that flight. Coach Jason Garrett had the unenviable task of trying to keep his team's focus on the challenge at hand while dealing with the emotional upheaval the death of a team mate and friend brings to the fore. And from the results of the contest, it seems he did an admirable job of doing just that.
Like most performers in the entertainment industry, and make no mistake, the NFL is a giant entertainment conglomerate, the team knew the show must go on. Sometimes the best way to deal with grief is to do what you do best and honor the fallen friend with a victory. Jerry Brown, Jr.'s number 53 Jersey made the trip North, was present in the locker room and on the sideline during the game. Even though their hearts were heavy with the loss of Jerry Brown, their minds were on the tough challenge presented to them by the Bengals.
It was a somewhat even contest in the first half when in the fading moments of the second quarter, the Bengals scored their second Field Goal to break the 10-all tie to lead at the half, 13-10. In the third quarter the Bengals held the Cowboys down somewhat, keeping them from scoring. The Cowboys in turn did not keep them from scoring, but did keep them out of the End Zone, forcing the Field Goal on two occasions to stretch their lead to 19-10 to start the Fourth Quarter. For the Bengals it was a game of missed opportunities with dropped passes stymieing their own drives and 3 dropped possible interceptions that could have punched a big hole in the Dallas game plan. Still, at 19-10, it looked like the game could get away from the Cowboys and a loss would make for a really long flight back to Dallas. "Dallas found some momentum late, however. After the defense came up with a big stop, Romo and Co. took over on their own 32-yard line, and steadily, he worked them down the field. On an first-and-20 following a penalty, the quarterback found Kevin Ogletree for a big 23-yard gain, then later found Austin on third-and-10 for a 15-yard pickup to the Cincy 27. That was immediately followed by Romo stepping up and completing a pass to Bryant over the middle, the receiver racing into the end zone to cut the lead to 19-17 with 6:35 remaining in the game. The Cowboys seem to gather life from that moment, with the defense stopping the Bengals next drive when Anthony Spencer broke up the middle on a third and 4 for a sack that pushed the Bengals back another ten yards. "With the Cowboys taking over on their own 28-yard line with 3:44 left, the team had a chance. Murray ran for five yards with a Romo-to-Witten connection picking up 9. Another 9 were added with a pass to Bryant with Murray carrying on the next three plays for a combined 11 yards, Dallas at the Cincinnati 40-yard line at the 2-minute warning. Coming out of the break, Dallas faced a third-and-1, but Murray picked up 3 yards to move the chains. Three plays later, it was third-and-5 with this time Murray going around the right end for six yards and the first down at the Bengals’ 24-yard line with only 24 seconds left. Romo snapped the ball one more time, Murray picking up 2 yards, the team then calling timeout with only 4 seconds to set up Baily for a 40-yard field goal. He split the uprights as time expired, Dallas taking the emotional 20-19 victory." The first thing you saw when the team swarmed onto the field to congratulate Bailey on the winning field goal was the jersey of Jerry Brown, Jr. being waved in victory like a flag.
In a post game interview, Coach Jason Garrett said "“I spoke to his mom after the ball game. I told her that we gave her son the game ball, and we’re going to share that with her. We’re going to have a memorial service Tuesday, and we’re going to continue to honor Jerry Brown and the kind of young man he has been.” “We had to come together, all of us, 11 guys, coaches, players, everybody, we had to come together, and the bonds we had as teammates had to get stronger. They were really strong for Jerry Brown.”
The Cowboys as a team wrought triumph out of tragedy and then turned to offer their support to the family of Jerry Brown, Jr. and to Josh Brent. With his teammates in Cincinnati, Josh Brent issued a statement Saturday night through his agent Peter Schaeffer regarding the tragic accident that took the life of teammate, former roommate and friend Jerry Brown: "I am devastated and filled with grief. Filled with grief for the loss of my close friend and team mate, Jerry Brown. I am also grief-stricken for his family, friends and all who were blessed enough to have known him. I will live with this horrific and tragic loss every day for the rest of my life. My prayers are with his family, our teammates and his friends at this time."
I would add that my thoughts and prayers are with all those who have suffered this loss including Josh Brent who, as he said, has to live with this event every day for the rest of his life. I wish them all comfort in this time of great sorrow.
