Will has made some significant progress in building the new super computer, although there have been some trials. When last we wrote about this we were having to RMA the original memory and upgrading to G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBXL. Upon its arrival we discovered that the original motherboard was dead in the water so we had to RMA that replacing it with a GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard which arrived yesterday. When I arrived home from work this morning, Will had it put together and the BIOS was configured properly but alas, there arose another challenge. The HDD was getting a S M A R T failure and gave a disk boot error meaning of course we now have to RMA that and get a different HDD. The original was a Seagate, but I don't think Will wants to try that brand again and has not yet decided what to get. I really like his monitor though, it is an ASUS 23" wide screen model that I can read from across the room without my glasses on, really, really nice and sharp imagery. The imagery is probably due in part to the GIGABYTE GV-N560UD-1G GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card which is a humungous hunk of metal tubes and circuitry that apparently works extremely well. So, once we get the new HDD, Will can install the OS (Windows 7 (x64) Ultimate Edition and he will be up and running. I am really proud of him for getting this done despite all the challenges in his first attempt ever at building a desktop. He has proved to me (and more importantly, to himself) that he can do this which should open up a few more possibilities for him in the future. Well Done, Will!
