Another Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Blog

Aerial View, Venicia, Italia

By now you are probably wondering why there was no post yesterday. Funny you should ask, for, as usual, Uncle Gerry has a story to tell. (When does he not?) It all began on a busy Friday night here at the hotel. I knew there was a reason I did not like working on Friday nights and I was heartily reminded of the reasons this week when I worked that shift. There is nothing really wrong with working on Friday's, except there seems to be an inordinate number of fools and liars about along with your assorted folks not playing with full decks or who have escaped the asylum just to pay us a visit. You would think they would have better locks on some of the cages these folks escaped from. I still get a kick out of the "tits and tats" girls trying to ply their wares to get something for nothing, however now I have the more mature ladies among the guests unashamedly flirting their foolish heads off chasing after an ineligible (to them) bachelor. Now my new friend coming in next weekend, that is a whole other story. But I digress. I was not a record night yet I managed to stay busy up until 5 am before it dropped off to nothing. This gave me time to catch up the paperwork and by 6:30 I was where I normally am at 5 o'clock. Not a big problem, it just cut my relax time before breakfast at seven was cut short. The real adventure started right when I got off from the front desk and put my wiz-eek hat on to consult with our GM on what he wanted done with the new computer he bought for the property we are renovating in Shreveport, LA.

Our GM could not get the computer to do anything because all this crap kept popping up on the screen. What he wanted to do is load a simple software interface program to track the finacial activity of the property we are renovating. I had the disk with the program and the GM gave me all his copious notes on what the data base was to contain so I sat down at computer in his office to take a look. Yes, there was crap all over the place like he said and I immediately ascertained the previous owner was download happy. Whoever had used this computer before had downloaded every conceivable variety of BS and extemporaneous program you could imagine resulting in 42 dozen tracing cookies, spyware, trojans, et cetera. I got the program to install right off, getting the computer clean enough to run it took the rest of the day. When the GM walked back in the office I he asked of my progress and i told him the program was installed already but I needed to clean up the computer so it could be operated efficiently by less than skilled personnel without a problem yet would not allow them the privilege of downloading miscellaneous files so I don't have to do this again. A lot of these programs installed did not show in the explorer window under add and remove programs but they showed up in the start menu under all programs (4 and a half panels of useless programs popped up when I clicked on all programs) thus the challenge to be answered was how to remove said junk without just wiping the hard drive and doing a clean install of XP Pro.

After removing all I could the traditional way, I still had 3 and a half panels of junk to remove. Luckily I found a program called Your Uninstaller which will uninstall anything by UrSoftware. You can get your trial version at their website which is valid for 21 days and then it is $19.95 to buy. If you uninstall everything you need to and then don't go to the same places that got you where you are, then you don't need to buy, but if you go lots of places on the internet, this just may be something you would like to put in your security arsenal. It then still took me another 3 hours to uninstall everything then begin to load secrity software and run it to try to make sure nothing was there that I did not want there. There were over 500 invalid registry issues, thousands of tracking cookies and my Avast AntiVirus found 15 Trojan Horses on its first boot time scan after installation. I sliced and diced with antispyware, registry cleaners, defraggers for the disk and the registry, antivirus and assorted utilities to prevent such occurances from happening in the future. By the time darkness fell, I was too mentally tired to even pick out the photos so I decided I would put the post off until today. I took a couple of Advil PM's, a trazadone and a generic naproxen sodium (Aleve) before I crashed out between 9 and 10.

Sunday morning I was jangled out of bed by my cellphone at 4 AM by my buddy in Omaha Will, who was wondering why I had not called him (sorta like you wondering why I had not posted). So my day began early but has turned out to be a terrific day. After talking with Will for a while I had to fix me some breakfast then clean up to attend services at Open Door. One of my coworkers was going to attend today also. It was a lovely service, the opening hymn was one from my youth my mother would play on Sunday mornings. Back then it was Tennessee Ernie Ford (16 Tons) singing "I walk through the Garden alone...." and I fondly remember listening when I was a little boy to that big bass voice coming from that funny man we saw on TV. As is the norm at Open Door the music was fabulous and Pastor Randy's message on "Angels's Unaware" was spot on and moving for today's world. It really makes my week go smoother when I attend and get uplifted to start the week off. A group of us went to try out the new Chinese Buffet in town for lunch before I returned to the hotel around 2:15. I got a call almost the minute I walked through the door notifying me of a staff meeting at 4 which lasted until 5:30.

So now here it is almost 6:30 and finally I am ready to put the disparate parts of the post and present it to you. That is my story and I am sticking to it. Ther is video today with Nuke, Holly Oaks, and Video Variety featuring Davey Wavey, Kai Miano and Jay Brannon.
