A Guiding Light
It has been an unusual week so far in that I have not been working the day shift as I have the last two days. The day shift is definitely a different animal than the evening shift or the audit shift. There is a lot of prep work to get the hotel ready for the next guests arriving after checking out the present guests and collecting from the ones who decide to stay over. The phone goes kind of beserk sometimes, always when one is trying to check in a guest or group. There can be no one around for an hour but as soon as a guest approaches the desk the phone starts ringing off the wall. Sometimes phones can be such an evil necessity, they delight in picking the most inopportune times to insist on attention. We do a lot of group bookings for sports teams, churches, school or business groups, and the military. This weekend we are having a group of soldiers fresh from their tours in Iraq after their initial debriefing as well as more sports teams. We have two large business groups in house for the next 3 weeks for their current local sales campaign who not only have large blocks of rooms but utilize the meeting rooms as well. Of course the coordinators for all these groups call during the day shift to make their arrangements, usually when I am trying to check in a guest. It takes teamwork and lots of multitasking to keep the whole thing running smoothly. I will get some more day shift experience on Friday and Sunday this week in addition to working the audit on Tuesday and Wednesday. Those of you out there that like to call me on Friday's will want to call on Thursday this week as I am off that day and Saturday this week.
As the weather warms the outdoor activities increase and the summer concert season will be starting soon at the AllTel Arena. This of course brings large groups of people from diverse areas in the region, many who need some place to recover from said activities before heading for home. So it looks like the next few weeks will be busy as the travel season gets into full swing and various events and tournaments bring lots of folks into town. One of the events I am looking forward to is Riverfest which is a 3 day party down at the River Market on Memorial Day Weekend. My birthday falls on or around Memorial Day annually so I am always looking for a party that weekend and this festival is supposed to be quite the to do with music, performance art, and many more activities all along the riverfront all weekend long. The hotel should be slammed that weekend but I should still have the opportunity to enjoy a lot of the festival.
I guess that is about it for today, I don't feel particularly witty, inspired or incensed enough to pontificate further so I won't. I will however leave you with today's selections in the eye candy section for your viewing pleasure. Until next time as always, Enjoy!
