7 Days To A Bettter Financial You

Medieval Ruins, Cashel, Ireland

My Monday was not so memorable as my Sunday, but it was a good day all the same. Got some rest from all the activity of the day before. I got a little grocery shopping in before I picked up an extra 4 hour shift in the afternoon. Then I still worked my regular shift at midnight. So this morning I am a little tired but happy. I am really liking the new keyboard and mouse, it makes an already great on line experience even better. I had to get used to the lightness of the mouse so that I did not send my cursor all over the screen by shoving with as much effort as it took to move the old mouse. The new keyboard types great also, no annoying little clicky noises, just smoothly operating keys with enough space between them so my fat fingers don't usually hit more than one at a time like on the last keyboard. As there was not that much time for adventure today, I will just have to entertain you with some videos and eye candy. But first I want to post this bulletin I received in my email from HRC:

Dear Gerry,

In every paycheck you've ever received, you've been contributing to Social Security. Imagine knowing that, should you die, your partner won't receive the survivor benefits you've paid for. Or imagine moving to another state, only to find that your partner will be kicked off of your health care plan.

Situations like these happen every day to GLBT people across the country. So HRC is launching a national effort TODAY to give same-sex couples and GLBT individuals the tools to navigate tax laws and ensure good financial decision-making.

Each weekday from now through April 15, we'll address one of the significant financial issues facing same-sex couples and individuals. Through a variety of simple online resources, including a webchat on financial issues, we can help answer your questions and offer helpful ideas you might not have thought of.

  • How do I ensure that the right person makes financial and health decisions if I am unable?
  • Do I need to take extra steps to make sure my loved ones are provided for?
  • What do I need to know about tax laws as part of a same-sex couple?

As part of this great program, be sure to join us for a webchat with financial advisor and Advocate contributor Joe Kapp and HRC Legal Director Lara Schwartz on Thursday, April 10 at 3 p.m. EST at www.hrc.org.

If you have specific questions that you would like to submit before the webchat, e-mail us at webchat@hrc.org.

Same-sex couples are denied more than 1,100 federal benefits and protections available to married couples. The best way to navigate this obstacle course? Getting informed, and getting organized!

I hope you'll join us.

Warmly,
Joe Solmonese
