This has been a busy busy week for me which is really amazing as I a supposedly underemployed and drawing assistance from the State of Texas. I have a couple of projects in the works that could pan out to be profitable so they are requiring some time of me. However I have managed to notice a couple of thing s in the news this week. I am posting the following video that I first saw on Americablog (thank you, John!). It is a terrific video by Max Blumenthal and chronicles a visit to College Republican National Convention. I cannot believe some of the people featured in the video are college educated, I wonder if they listen to themselves talking? Take a look, the video is hilarious, but sobering at the same time in the fact that these young people actually believe the BS that is coming out of their mouths.
Also in the news this week is the stand that Caspar, Wyoming took against hate. As most of you know, Caspar is the hometown of the late Matthew Shepard who lost his life in a brutally heinous hate crime in 1998. His funereal was the coming out party for one of the most vile persons in America, Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church. It seems Freddy boy still has a hard on for Matthew after all these years. He offered to erect a monument to Matthew in Caspar's Monument Plaza. It was to have been 5-6 feet tall of granite or marble bearing a bronze plaque reading "MATTHEW SHEPARD, Entered Hell October 12, 1998, in Defiance of God's Warning: 'Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is abomination.' Leviticus 18:22." The City of Caspar refused the gesture with the following statement"
"Casper's historic monument plaza is a collection of documents that are the underpinning and foundation of our law," Mayor Kate Sarosy wrote in a reply to Phelps. "Your monument is simply religious in character, based on your personal religious beliefs regarding Matthew Shepard, and bears no historical significance to the foundation of the law for our country. As such, the city cannot place your monument on city property without violating the establishment clause of the United States Constitution." I applaud the citizens of Caspar and their Mayor for rejecting this patently hateful memorial to a truly wonderful person who did not deserve to die as he did. Matthew's father, Dennis, just yesterday posted an appeal on The Advocate website which reads in part "All of us—gay and straight alike–need to act. Hate affects each and every one of us. It knows no limits, follows no clear set of rules, and has infiltrated our society’s most basic institutions. For that reason, I am humbled that the United States House of Representatives has chosen to act, and to do so in Matt’s memory, and the United States Senate is poised to follow. They are now taking the first giant steps in making the Matthew Shepard Act the law of our land..........I challenge all of you to follow the example of the House by making the choice to act. Encourage your senators to vote for the Matthew Shepard Act. Today. Tell your story about how hate has affected your family. Today. Come out as LGBT and allied. Today. Choose to erase hate. Today! We all have a responsibility to act. If we don’t–who will?"To find out how to contact your senators, please visit matthewshepard.org. The Matthew Shepard Act was attached to a defense spending bill that has been put off due to controversy over the Iraq war with the Republicans being obstinate again and the Democrats being chickenhearted. We need to make ourselves hear in the Senate and get this legislation and ENDA passed now and put on George's desk with enough votes to block George's expected veto. It is time to Erase Hate in America and you can help. Will you?
End of Rant and on to more pleasant things like eye candy. Until next time as always, Enjoy!
