In the April 1 edition of the New York Times, there was a story published about Zach O'Conner of Madison, Conn. Zach is a 17 year old Gay youth who came out to his parents when he was 13. It is an inspiring story entitled Accepting Gay Identity, And Gaining Strength. The article also has an audio recording by Zach and a link to download the mp3 of the recording. What touched me most was his parents reaction of ‘O.K., that’s fine, we still love you.’ I wish more parents were so understanding and accepting. As the current generation comes of age and starts becoming parents, I think we will see more of the acceptance of Gay children as this generation seems to be more accepting of Gay people in general. No doubt homophobia still exists, but we are winning the battle, we must continue to press on to the final victory of equality for all humans.
